Coughing with a respiratory infection
A cough often accompanies a respiratory infection and may continue for some time after a cold. Get some rest and avoid tobacco smoke.
Relieving symptoms
Drink regularly, in an amount that feels right for you; drinks should be at a comfortable temperature. Honey may slightly relieve a cough caused by a cold in children. Children under one year of age must not be given honey.
Avoid hot water
Do not inhale steam over a bowl of hot water, as there is a risk of scalding. Very hot baths are not a suitable way to “sweat out” viruses.
When should you see a doctor?
If symptoms persist or get worse, have the cause assessed by a doctor. For sudden, severe difficulty breathing, call 112.
