Often part of a cold
A sore throat often occurs with a cold. The most suitable treatment depends on the cause.
What may feel soothing
Many people find throat lozenges or gargling with salt water or tea soothing. A reliable benefit from throat compresses has not been scientifically established; research into gargling is also limited.
Treatment and examination
If needed, suitable painkillers can relieve symptoms. Ask a doctor or pharmacist for advice on choosing and using them. An examination is advisable if symptoms are severe, getting worse or lasting longer. For sudden, severe difficulty breathing, call 112.
